5 Step Critique 1. Observe 2. Describe: This photograph is a 13" x 19" print on metallic paper of a sepia colored flower. It is taken at a level angle in close-up mode. It has not got a large amount of depth to it, and is a simple concept. In editing I added the sepia filter and adjusted the contrast to be lower to make it look vintage. The flowers were originally orange and the background was a lightly colored wood, and the flower stem was more of a warm toned green than cool. 3. Analyze: One element of art that this photo best represents is color and it creates the principle of design of balance. The color palette is very even through the photo which balances the background to be less contrasting to the subject. This works well because the subject matter is so simple and there is not a lot of depth that needs to be shown. Another element in this photo would be shape which creates the principle of proportion. The size of the shape of the flower is proportional to how much background is shown in the photo. This adds to the old fashioned feeling. 4. Interpret: My interpretation of this photo is vintage themed. It reminds me of a whole vintage store because they have the most random objects usually. I think the message is to portray how simple objects can remind us of daily occurrences and photography is not always super abstract and artistic. This explores the more mundane aspect of photography. This photograph addresses the theme that not everything has to be over-complicated, and simplicity pays off. 5. Evaluate: I think that this photo is successful because of how the colors equalized exactly how I intended them to. The color palette is not very wide, but the shade range creates just enough depth to intrigue the viewer. This makes me want to explore vintage photography further, such as using real film instead. I feel like this photo could have been improved if it was taken against a professional background. Even if there wasn't a professional background it could have been improved by lining up the flower with the panels of wood. It would have made the photo more interesting if there were more random objects included.
