5 Step Critique 1. Observe 2. Describe: This photograph is a 13" x 19" print on glossy paper of a red sky. It is essentially just a picture of clouds edited to be black/white then edited with a red hue. It is taken at an angle that is looking up, but not quite parallel, to it in automatic mode. The photo was originally blue and white. 3. Analyze: One element of art that this photo best represents is color and it creates the principle of design of unity. The color palette is the same through the photo which unites the contrasting sky to the lighter clouds. This works well because the subject matter repeats throughout the photo and there are really only two areas that are opposite (being the clouds versus the sky). Another element in this photo would be shape which creates the principle of rhythm. The shape of the clouds repeats throughout the entire photograph but they are not all exactly the same creating rhythm rather than repetition. These add to the powerful mood. 4. Interpret: I interpret this photo as having the theme of uniting through juxtaposition. Without the background the clouds would just be there with nothing to support them, and the background without the clouds is just boring, but when you juxtapose them they create a wonderful scene. I think the message is to portray that simplicity can be boring or it can be interesting, depending on one's own opinion. This photograph addresses the theme that perspective can change how a person interprets their whole world. 5. Evaluate:I think that this photo is successful because of how the color is completely opposite of what anybody would expect a sky to look like, and how the color is a more vibrant hue rather than a subtle undertone. I feel like this photo could have been improved if there was another smaller focal point, such as a bird) to offset the rhythm of the clouds and the sky. The photo would have also been more interesting if only the clouds or only the background was colored red.
