Photography
I am a contemporary photographer. I create my work by using a different way of editing every time (while still using the rudimentary tools) so as not to become repetitive. I like photography because I think it is a very modern style of art, and you can do so much with photos that you cannot do in other types of art. My art connects with my life because I can integrate my photos with my personal sense of style and aesthetics. I feel like I could photograph most anything and make it look great, and that I am generally better at photography than other types of art. As a photographer I would say I am good at picking color palettes that look like they belong together to bring the photo all together.
My creative process is to have a concept, find something that inspires me, and in editing combine the concept with the photos. I get my ideas from seeing other photographers’ work on platforms like VSCO and getting inspired to do something unexpected and unique. I created my work because each of these subjects caught my eye and when I have a subject I already start thinking about how and why I’m going to edit it. In my work I definitely like to keep a series of photos within the same subject range. My editing is not very complex because I believe that the focus of the art should be the photo and not the editing. I like to always keep the principles and elements in mind when taking photos as well. In my portfolio I am most proud of Assignment 6 because I really enjoyed how abstract it turned out to be. From doing my portfolio work I learned that artists cannot spend just a few days on each of their pieces to really perfect them and make them look like real art, not just high school art class pieces. I learned that photography is much harder than it looks. My work can be described as “simplistic but complex”.
I anticipate that that viewers might want to know why I take photos that may seem ugly to some but fine art to others. I want viewers to know that art is an attainable activity to get good at, because at the beginning of the semester I knew nothing about photography but I am still able to put out pieces I am proud of. I think in the future I will continue to think of the principles/elements when I take photos for my other social media platforms/photography portfolios.
